"Il Viaggio delle Radici" stops at Mabos! Join us on Sunday, June 23, starting at 4:30 PM. Domenica 23 Giugno – dalle ore 16.30.

This event, hosted by Italea at Mabos, aims to provide a moment of reflection on emigration and the potential of the territory. The experience will kick off with a guided tour of the exhibition "Camera Oscura: Mario Giacomelli and the Song of the New Emigrants," followed by a workshop that will discuss photography as a tool that conveys messages from a time that remains alive in many Calabrian families.

A discussion will follow, providing a valuable opportunity to reflect together on how the mountains, once a focal point of emigration, have transformed into a place of experimentation and innovation.

Participants in the talk include:

Elisabetta Longo, Director of Mabos

Serena Franco, Italea Calabria Representative

Emilio Leo, Lanificio Leo

Nietta Chiodo, Festival del Lamento

Moderated by: Angelo Carchidi, Italea Calabria

The event will conclude with a captivating performance featuring a concert by Sergio Beercock – Gotico Mediterraneo, followed by a DJ set.

PodCards: Messages from the Present – A New Workshop at MABOS!

The PodCards: Messages from the Present workshop is designed for a diverse audience and serves as the concluding moment of a guided journey through the Camera Oscura exhibition, dedicated to “Mario Giacomelli and The Song of New Emigrants.” This workshop engages with the themes of emigration through the artistic and poetic visions of the renowned photographer from Marche and the Calabrian poet Franco Costabile. Unlike traditional documentary photography with a distinctly neorealist flavor, Giacomelli’s work reflects an introspective investigation into feelings of emptiness, loss of identity, and the absence of familiar places, focusing on the “survivors” left behind and the “ghosts” of migrants. Following this immersive experience centered around the relationship between Giacomelli and Costabile, the PodCards: Messages from the Presentshifts focus to a more personal dimension of migration photography: the familial exchanges that occur through images. Participants will examine photographs of migrants returning to their native homes and families, carrying visual and textual messages that often resemble postcards. These memories and documents are of great significance, prompting participants to engage with them to fully understand the phenomenon of emigration through empathy and identification with the individuals depicted and their messages from the past. Participants are encouraged to bring a photograph from home that fits this description, which they will work on to create a response or a “message from the present.” This message will be formulated and “sent” to a universal recipient using digital technology. The outcomes of the workshop will be shared in collaboration with Italea and MABOS on a podcast platform.
